Deepfakes, AI-generated synthetic media, are increasingly used by cybercriminals for remote social engineering attacks. This study examines the role of cognitive styles and flexibility in deepfake detection and metacognitive accuracy. Among 247 participants, those with greater cognitive flexibility were better at detecting deepfakes and had more accurate self-assessments of their detection abilities, while cognitive styles were not linked to performance. These findings highlight the importance of cognitive flexibility in recognizing deepfakes and evaluating one's vulnerability to social engineering.
