Planting a Poison SEAD: Using Social Engineering Active Defense to Counter Cybercriminals

The current state of information security is inadequate, as attackers often hold the advantage, needing only one success to breach defenses. This paper argues that shifting from a traditional passive defense to an active strategy using Social Engineering Active Defense (SEAD) will more effectively counter malicious actors. The Offensive Countermeasures (OCM) approach, which includes annoyance, attribution, and attack, is proposed as a model. These strategies aim to waste attackers' resources, identify them, and even run counterattacks to deter future threats. The paper suggests leveraging synthetic media and automated SEAD methods to disrupt and de-anonymize online attackers, advocating for further research in these areas.
