Repeat Clicking: A Lack of Awareness Is Not the Problem

Phishing is a common tactic used by cybercriminals, but not everyone is equally susceptible. Research shows that a subset of employees, known as "repeat clickers," are particularly prone to falling for phishing attempts and may contribute to many real-world data breaches. In contrast, "protective stewards" consistently avoid phishing traps and report suspicious emails. This study conducted interviews with both groups, finding that while both could identify potential phishing cues, repeat clickers exhibited higher confidence but had more rigid email-checking habits and a less reliable memory for critical information. Further research is needed to confirm these findings on a larger scale.
