Socio-technical communication: The hybrid space and the OLB model for science-based cyber education
July 30, 2018

Lessons from safety-critical sociotechnical systems, such as aviation and acute medical care, underscore the vital role of human factors and effective communication between human agents. Failures in communication have been linked to many fatal incidents in aviation, highlighting the need for cognitive engineering to enhance performance in both civilian and military domains. The Hybrid Space framework provides a blueprint for addressing cognitive and behavioral challenges in military cyber operations. This paper applies the Hybrid Space framework to communication challenges in the military cyber domain, proposing a three-phase Orienting, Locating, Bridging model for improving communication. It also discusses the training and skill sets taught to cyber officer cadets at the Norwegian Defence Cyber Academy, aligning them with cognitive engineering principles.
