The Role of IT Background for Metacognitive Accuracy, Confidence and Overestimation of Deep Fake Recognition Skills
February 2022

The rise of deep fakes is reshaping cybercrime and political disinformation by exploiting trust where technical defenses are weak. This study highlights the need for personalized cybersecurity training, particularly for those with IT backgrounds who often overestimate their ability to detect deep fakes. We propose an overconfidence score to identify at-risk individuals, allowing for more targeted education to improve their recognition skills and reduce cybersecurity risks.
